Bio

Marc LawrenceThis boy from New York City is a classically trained musician, an edgy lyricist,  a contemporary composer and singer.  On the sidelines for years working for Corporate America as a Systems Analyst, Marc has finally  found the time to deliver his debut disc, "Made In The USA" ("USA").  The sound is both melodic and rough; the issues are both political and emotional.  This "alternative rock" CD includes diverse styles such as blues rock, psychedelic rock, R&B and more.

Marc covers a lot of ground here.  He sings about strained relationships, personal turmoil, irresponsible behavior,  repression, exploitation, rebellion and more.  On "USA", Marc shares his opinions and observations with sometimes brutal honesty.

Growing up in Brooklyn, NY, Marc listened to his Mother's old country records along with the rock, pop and R&B music on the radio.  As he grew a bit older, he stepped out of his home in Brooklyn and started hanging out at places in downtown Manhattan like Folk City (where Dylan started out) and CBGB's (aka "Home of Underground Rock").  "I can still remember the picture of Bob Dylan hanging on the wall at Folk City.  I was thinking, he's one of the most influential artists of our time and it's so cool that I'm hanging out at this club where he used to play".  At CBGB's, Marc was exposed to a somewhat different sound.  He sat and watched bands playing music that was completely different from what was being played on the radio.  He was impressed with the whole concept of artists being true to their craft and not cranking out deliberately radio friendly garbage.  He loved some of the mainstream giants but realized the importance of maintaining artistic integrity.

Out of college and into the "Real World", his club days were pretty much over.  But he had a dream of one day making a record of his own.  And so the seeds were planted for what was yet to come.  For years he wrote down lyrics and tucked them away for future reference.  In 1997, he wrote the lyrics for the title track "Made In The U.S.A.".  This time, he wanted to bring the lyrics to life so he teamed up with Jessica Sade, a singer/songwriter/guitarist in a rock band which played at some of the underground clubs in New York.  She wrote the music for his lyrics and that was the beginning of the "USA" project.  He decided to take some guitar classes at The New School Guitar Study Center.  In his intro class, everyone got the assignment to perform solo for the other members of the class during the final class of the semester.  His teacher encouraged her students to write an original composition.  He told her that he can write lyrics but could not write his own music.  She told him, "Yes, you can".  So he wrote the lyrics for the track "Far Away", and in his living room he strummed his guitar and sang into a tape recorder.  He performed that song for his class and got a favorable response from them and his teacher.  He still remembers one of his classmates saying, "So when is the album coming out?".  That was a good question.  To focus on his business career and record an album was a difficult task.

Again, he teamed up with Jessica and slowly began a serious effort to make a record.  A few years later, here it is.  "Made In The USA" by Marc Lawrence.
